Heart Break

I swear this is the last one. Really.

Heart Break

Blood,
Tracing the lines of my wrist
In sanguine droplets,
Like a single petal from a rich red rose,
Falling lazily down from its thorny perch.

Letters,
Spelling your name
On my skin, in swollen scars,
Like the marble-carved proof
Of an emperor’s eternal love.

Eyes,
Red-rimmed from streaming tears,
Hollow from lack of sleep,
Like dying tapers in a darkened house
Fading slowly into non-existence.

Paper,
Inscribed with familiar script,
Torn into miniscule shreds,
Like the fallen leaves of a pale autumn,
Mourning the end of glorious summer days.

Speech,
Clipped and correct,
Every syllable a measured monotone,
Like morsels of food rationed out
To the hideous survivors of a ghastly famine.

Visage,
Suddenly, swiftly mature,
Lines etched by grief, not age,
Like a victim of some strange torture,
Who must slowly stand upright under a back-breaking weight.
